Ravi's Praise of the Fortnight:
Household Products for the Next Seven Generations

Household products heavily pollute the indoor air we breath

=> Corporate America's Response:
Seventh Generation has developed environmentally friendly products along with an educational campaign

=> Society's Response:
Enough people are recognizing the value that the company has products in thousands of grocery stores worldwide, and they have been around for 15 years.

=> Ravi's Commentary:
Your going to pay a little more than you will for toxic products. However, like many things, you get what you pay for. Healthier air and a better planet for generations to come should be worth the additional investment. Environmentally conscious companies are probably the most abundant category of corporations exhibiting social responsibility. As it is an increasing concern in America, and a campaign issue as well, non-environmentally conscious companies are often exposed. Yet, society continues to bring so many harmful chemicals into our homes without even realizing it, and our kids and pets crawl around on floors covered in pollutants. It takes more than just manufacturing products. Education is crucial, and Seventh Generation is doing it through online newsletter (which of course also promote their brand) and perhaps could take it further by instigating some sort of awareness program in school systems. Their products are backed by 100% money back guarantee, and anyone can access their newsletters online. But rather than further summarizing the company here, check out Seventh Generation.

Ravi's Praise of the Fortnight:
Airline Sings a Happy Tune

The Airline Industry is still losing billions of dollars per year due to post 9/11 fears.

=> Corporate America's Response:
Song, a division of Delta Airlines, rewards passengers who are "nice" with free travel. Help a fellow passenger or be kind to airline personnel and you might just be handed a free ticket.

=> Society's Response:
Passengers are already reporting that they are intrigued by the promotion and believe that it will put people in better moods on airplanes (AP)

=> Ravi's Commentary:
Talk about taking lemons and making lemonade! Since there are more seats flying than passengers these days, why not fill them with a customer who will not only appreciate the airline for the "gift," but also find it an exceptionally friendly experience? Obviously this is all about money and developing brand loyalty, but nevertheless Song is challenging people to bring out the best in themselves and their fellow passengers. Push someone to be nice, and they just might realize how good it can actually feel!

"Airline Sings a Happy Tune"

Funny they should call it “Song”… I recently had a singing experience at 33000 feet…On the many occasions I have traveled with a guitar, I have been asked countless times when boarding an airplane – “Oh you gonna play us a song?” by a crew member – that sort of standard little joke when you see someone with a guitar. They never really meant it, although I happily would have played… I’ve confirmed this with friends and other guitar carrying passengers – they too have been asked the question, but never seriously. In April of 2004 I was flying back from Ft Lauderdale Fl on JetBlue, and the steward smiled and asked “the question”. “Of course”, I said, “as long as I can pass the hat!”, and smiled and he laughed and I sat down. Halfway thru the flight he came to ask if I was ready to play a few songs for the passengers!! I suggested he ask the passengers if they would mind – since I am not exactly of world renown… Next thing you know I am sitting in the crew jump seat while the steward holds the public address mike open for me to play and sing into. It was just way cool – the passengers loved it, I loved it, the crew loved it – I even sold a few CD’s. I was impressed with JetBlue for that – I think the crew was very much responding to the tense environment in the skies today by doing something a bit different, a bit silly, a bit fun…
